BBPS Disables NEFT & IMPS as Payment Modes for Bills

On May 14th 2025 , in a move aimed at ensuring data integrity and operational efficiency, Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), under NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd., has issued a circular to all its operating units, announcing the removal of NEFT and IMPS as eligible bill payment modes.

Background & Rationale:

As per the current framework, NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer) and IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) were listed as valid payment modes across various BBPS channels and biller categories. However, an internal review revealed that these modes are rarely used directly by customers for bill payments.

Moreover, the potential misuse or incorrect use of these modes can lead to data discrepancies, which may affect accurate reporting to Bill Operating Units (BOUs) and billers.

Key Directive:

  • Effective Immediately:
NEFT and IMPS will be disabled for all payment channels and categories within the BBPS ecosystem.

  • Feedback Window:
Any concerns or objections must be submitted by May 20, 2025 to BBPS for review.

This action reinforces BBPS’s commitment to streamlining payment processing and maintaining accurate transactional data across its network.
