The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is organizing a national workshop focused on the integration of Renewable Energy (RE) through Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The first phase of this workshop is scheduled to be held on May 8, 2025, in a hybrid mode, allowing participation both online and potentially in person.
This initiative follows an earlier communication from the Energy Storage System Division (ESSD) of the CEA, dated April 28th, 2025, inviting Renewable Energy and ESS vendors to join the workshop online. The aim of the workshop is to discuss and strategize the effective integration of energy storage solutions to support the growing adoption of renewable energy sources in India.
The CEA has now released the final agenda for the workshop, providing a detailed schedule of the sessions and speakers. Key topics to be covered during the day-long event include:
- Combating Climate Change: Policy Framework for Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems: This session will feature insights from Dr. Veepin Kumar, Deputy Director (DD) of ESSD, CEA, and Sh. Deepak Choudhary, DD, RP&T, CEA, focusing on the policy landscape driving the integration of RE and ESS.
- Learnings from recently commissioned BRPL 20 MW/ 40 MWh BESS plant in Delhi: Sh. Abhishek Ranjan, CEO of BRPL, will share valuable experiences and learnings from a recently operationalized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plant.
- Renewable Energy Prospects: Dr. Kuldeep Rana, Scientist-E from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), will provide an overview of the future prospects and growth potential of renewable energy in the country.
- RE + Storage construct including RTS and DRE with Storage: Smt. Ammi R. Toppo, Chief Engineer, IRP, CEA, will discuss the construction and implementation of combined Renewable Energy and Storage projects, including Rooftop Solar (RTS) and Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) with storage solutions.
- Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs): Sh. Sharvan Kumar, Chief Engineer, HPP&I, CEA, will shed light on the role and advancements in Pumped Storage Projects for energy storage.
- Stellar Resource Adequacy Tool for Storage location optimization Study in State Transmission Grid: Sh. Vijay Menghani, Chief Engineer, CE&ET, CEA, will present a tool for optimizing the location of energy storage within the state transmission grid.
- Replacement of DG Set with BESS: A Techno Commercial Study at Sewa Bhawan Building: Dr. Veepin Kumar (DD, ESSD, CEA) and Dr. Himanshu Jain (Assistant Professor, IIT Roorkee) will present a study on the technical and commercial feasibility of replacing Diesel Generator (DG) sets with Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Modular BESS for replacement of the DG Set: Representatives from Newen System (Sh. Nitin Sharma, MD & CEO), Replus (Sh. Hiren Pravin Shah, MD & CEO), and Phoenix Contact (Sh. Amit Tyagi, Vice President) will present on modular BESS solutions for DG set replacement.
- Recent Tenders in Solar and BESS highlighting Discovered Prices: A representative from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will share insights on recent tenders and price trends in the solar and BESS sectors.
- Learnings from In-Operation 1.7 MW Solar + 0.5 MW/ 1.4 MWh BESS plant in Lakshadweep: Sh. Sandeep Reddy from SECI will discuss the operational experiences of an integrated solar and battery storage plant in Lakshadweep.
- Learnings from Under Construction 2 MW (AC) Solar + 1 MWh BESS plant at KAZA, Himachal Pradesh: Sh. Prashant Upadhayay from SECI will provide updates and learnings from a solar plus storage project under development in Himachal Pradesh.
The workshop will conclude with remarks from the Member (Planning) of the CEA.
