The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has responded decisively to reports of plastic sheets being used in the steaming process of idlis in Karnataka restaurants, demanding immediate action from the state’s Food Safety Department.
The FSSAI issued a press release revealing that they have directed the Karnataka State Food Safety Department to submit a detailed report and implement stringent measures against any Food Business Operators (FBOs) found violating food safety regulations.

Serious Health Concerns Over Steaming of Idlis
The use of plastic sheets in steaming idlis raises serious concerns due to the potential for harmful chemicals to leach from the plastic into the food, especially under high temperatures.
Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI has stated:
“The use of low-quality or non-food-grade plastics in food preparation, particularly under high temperatures, poses a serious health risk”
These low-grade plastics can release toxic substances like bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which can cause adverse health effects.
FSSAI’s Directives
- The Karnataka State Food Safety Department has been instructed to take immediate necessary action against violators.
- FBOs or hotels found using plastic in food preparation will face strict penalties.
- FSSAI is working closely with state officials to investigate the matter thoroughly.
- The authority is closely monitoring the situation to ensure consumer safety.
The FSSAI emphasizes that the use of food-grade materials and hygienic practices are crucial in food preparation. The traditional method of steaming idlis or the use of approved food-grade materials that do not pose a risk of chemical contamination is strongly recommended.
