Government Proposes Ban on Several Antimicrobials in Animals Due to Human Health Risk

The notification states that the Central Government is satisfied that the use of the listed antimicrobials in animals is likely to involve risks to humans and that safer alternatives are available for animal use. The decision to propose this prohibition is deemed necessary and expedient in the public interest.

The draft notification, issued after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board, lists a comprehensive range of antimicrobials, including antibiotics, antivirals, and antiprotozoals, that are proposed to be prohibited for animal use.

Antibiotics

The list of antibiotics proposed for the ban includes:

  1. Ureidopenicillins
  2. Ceftobiprole
  3. Ceftaroline
  4. Siderophore cephalosporins
  5. Carbapenems
  6. Penems
  7. Monobactams
  8. Glycopeptides
  9. Lipopeptides
  10. Oxazolidinones
  11. Fidaxomicin
  12. Plazomicin
  13. Glycylcyclines
  14. Eravacycline
  15. Omadacycline

Antivirals

The list of antivirals proposed for the ban includes:

  1. Amantadine
  2. Baloxavir marboxil
  3. Celgosivir
  4. Favipiravir
  5. Galidesivir
  6. Lactimidomycin
  7. Laninamivir
  8. Methisazone/ Metisazone
  9. Molnupiravir
  10. Nitazoxanide
  11. Oseltamivir
  12. Peramivir
  13. Ribavirin
  14. Rimantadine
  15. Tizoxanide
  16. Triazavirin
  17. Umifenovir
  18. Zanamivir

Antiprotozoal

The antiprotozoal proposed for the ban is Nitazoxanide.

The Ministry has invited objections and suggestions from all persons likely to be affected by this proposed ban. These can be submitted by June 21, 2022.
