Govt Extends Public Utility Status for Uranium Industry

In a move aimed at safeguarding national interest and ensuring uninterrupted services in a critical sector, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has issued a fresh notification extending the status of the Uranium Industry as a “public utility service” under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

The decision was formalized through Notification dated May 20, 2025, citing the continued need to maintain stability and prevent disruptions in this strategically important industry.

Key Highlights:

  • What’s the change?
The Uranium Industry will continue to be classified as a public utility service under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

  • 🗓️ Effective Duration:
The extended status will be in force for six months starting from June 20, 2025.

  • 📜 Previous Declaration:
The industry had already been granted this status from December 20, 2024, under notification S.O. 5514(E).

  • 📌 Legal Basis:
The declaration is made under the proviso to sub-clause (vi) of clause (n) of section 2 of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

Why It Matters

The Uranium Industry plays a vital role in India’s nuclear energy and defense sectors. Classifying it as a public utility service ensures that any industrial dispute within this sector is subjected to stricter regulation, particularly relating to strikes and lockouts, thus minimizing the risk of service disruption.
