Govt Mandates BIS Mark for Primary Lead from Oct 2025

In a significant step towards ensuring product quality, the Ministry of Mines has issued the Primary Lead (Quality Control) Order, 2025, under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The order mandates that Primary Lead must conform to prescribed Indian standards and bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Standard Mark.

The new rule will come into effect six months from its publication date, i.e., from October 17, 2025. It applies to goods sold domestically and excludes those meant for export.

Key Provisions of the Order:

  • Mandatory BIS Certification: All Primary Lead products must conform to IS 27:2023 – Primary Lead – Specification.

  • Enforcement: The Bureau of Indian Standards will act as the certifying and enforcement authority.

  • Scope: Applies to all Primary Lead products except those meant for export.
