India Fixes September 23rd as Annual Ayurveda Day

Ayurveda Day has been celebrated annually to promote Ayurveda as a scientific, evidence-based, and holistic system of medicine crucial for preventive healthcare and overall wellness. Previously, this day aligned with Dhanteras, a festival in the Hindu month of Kartik, typically falling in October or November. However, the fluctuating date of Dhanteras presented logistical hurdles for organizing consistent national and international Ayurveda Day events.

To address this, the Ministry of Ayush formed an expert committee to explore suitable alternatives. After careful consideration, the panel proposed four potential dates, with September 23 emerging as the preferred choice. This decision was based on both practical considerations and the symbolic significance of the date.

The newly fixed date coincides with the autumnal equinox. This astronomical event, marking a time when day and night are nearly equal, perfectly resonates with the core principles of Ayurveda, which emphasizes the importance of balance between the mind, body, and spirit. The equinox, representing cosmic harmony, beautifully underscores Ayurveda’s philosophy of living in harmony with nature.

The Ministry of Ayush is now urging individuals, healthcare professionals, academic institutions, and international partners to adopt September 23 as the permanent date for Ayurveda Day celebrations each year. The Ministry views this shift as a pivotal opportunity to further integrate Ayurveda into global health discussions and promote its enduring value as a preventive and sustainable healthcare system for the world.
