The Central Pollution Control Board has published a list of 146 private environmental laboratories that have been officially recognized under Section 12(1) B of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. This updated roster is valid as of June 10, 2025.
The recognition grants these laboratories the authority to conduct environmental testing and analysis, playing a pivotal role in ensuring adherence to environmental regulations across various industries. Their work is essential for assessing pollution levels, verifying environmental impact assessments, and supporting regulatory decisions.
The newly recognized facilities are strategically spread across India, with a strong presence in states such as:
- Karnataka leads with a substantial number of recognized laboratories.
- Maharashtra demonstrates significant capacity in environmental testing.
- Gujarat, Delhi, and Haryana feature a high concentration of accredited labs.
- Other states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, and Rajasthan, also have recognized laboratories contributing to regional environmental oversight.
This recognition process ensures that environmental data used for policy-making and enforcement is reliable and scientifically sound. By expanding the network of accredited laboratories, the government aims to enhance the efficiency and reach of environmental quality management nationwide, thereby strengthening the framework for a healthier and more sustainable environment.
