India Imposes Port Restrictions on Imports from Bangladesh

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification imposing port restrictions on the import of several categories of goods from Bangladesh into India. The directive, effective immediately from May 17, 2025, aims to regulate the entry points for specific commodities.

According to Notification, the import of all kinds of Ready Made Garments from Bangladesh will no longer be permitted through any land ports. These garments will now only be allowed to enter India via the Nhava Sheva and Kolkata seaports.

Furthermore, the notification restricts the import of several other items through Land Customs Stations (LCSs) and Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, as well as through LCS Changrabandha and Fulbari in West Bengal. These restricted goods include:

  1. Fruit/ Fruit flavoured and Carbonated Drinks
  2. Processed food items
  3. Cotton and Cotton Yarn Waste
  4. Plastic and PVC finished goods (with specific exceptions for pigments, dyes, plasticisers, and granules used as input for own industries)
  5. Wooden Furniture

However, the port restrictions explicitly do not apply to the import of the following goods from Bangladesh:

  • Fish
  • LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)
  • Edible Oil
  • Crushed stone

It is important to note that these port restrictions will also not apply to goods originating from Bangladesh that are transiting through India but are ultimately destined for Nepal and Bhutan.
