India Permits Import of Watermelon From Uzbekistan

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has issued the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India)(Fifteenth Amendment) Order, 2024. This Order was issued on November 12, 2024.

These Amendment Orders have revised the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order, 2003.

This Order permits the import of Citrullus lanatus, popularly know as Watermelon, from Uzbekistan.

This import shall be subject to the following additional declarations required to be incorporated into Phytosanitary Certificate:

The fruit for consumption of watermelon, shall be free from Pseudomonas syringae pv. lachrymans. This is a is a bacterial pathogen that causes angular leaf spot.

Moreover, the import shall also be subject to the following special conditions of import:

  1. Export consignment must comply with Systems Approach for production and export
  2. Free from soil
