India Proposes License-Free Use of 6GHz Band for Wi-Fi

On May 16, 2025 , In a significant move aimed at expanding high-speed wireless connectivity, the Ministry of Communications has released draft rules proposing the unlicensed use of the lower 6GHz band (5925–6425 MHz) for Wi-Fi and other wireless access systems (WAS/RLAN).

What’s in the Draft?

The “Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System including Radio Local Area Network in Lower 6 GHz band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2025” proposes:

  • No licensing requirement for use of wireless equipment in the 5925–6425 MHz band.

  • Applicability to Low Power Indoor and Very Low Power Outdoor systems on a non-interference, non-protection, and shared basis.

Key Technical Parameters

Device TypeMax PSDMax e.i.r.pEmission BandwidthMax Out-of-Band Emissions
Low Power Indoor5 dBm/MHz30 dBm320 MHz-27 dBm/MHz
Very Low Power Outdoor-5 dBm/MHz14 dBm320 MHz-27 dBm/MHz

Operational Restrictions

  • Not allowed on oil platforms, land vehicles, boats, or aircrafts (except above 10,000 feet).

  • Use for drones and unmanned aerial systems is prohibited.

  • Devices must have in-built antennas, be type approved, and meet international safety standards.

Emission and Interference Control

  • Strict out-of-band emission limits are defined to prevent interference.

  • In case of harmful interference with licensed systems, users may be directed to relocate, reduce power, or cease operations after due process.

The application for obtaining equipment type approval shall be made to the Central Government in the format given in Annexure

Public Feedback Invited

The draft is open to suggestions or objections from stakeholders and the public for 30 days (June 15, 2025) Responses should be sent to the Joint Secretary (Telecom), Department of Telecommunications, at Sanchar Bhawan, New Delhi.

This initiative aligns with global trends toward unlicensed 6GHz Wi-Fi deployment, fostering broader internet access and next-gen connectivity for homes, enterprises, and public spaces in India.
