As the digital transformation of the insurance sector accelerates, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued a circular urging all regulated entities and training institutes to actively participate in National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2025, observed globally throughout the month of October.
The circular, released on 6th October 2025 (Ref No: IRDAI/GA&HR/CIR/MISC/111/10/2025), highlights the importance of enhancing cybersecurity awareness in both public and private sectors. With the increasing number of cyber threats targeting the financial and insurance sectors, IRDAI emphasizes the urgent need to foster a culture of cyber hygiene and digital safety across the industry.
Why NCSAM Matters for the Insurance Sector
The digitalization of insurance services — from online policy issuance to claim processing and customer service — has expanded the sector’s exposure to cyber risks. As a result, cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue but a business imperative.
By participating in NCSAM 2025, insurance companies, intermediaries, and training institutes can play a crucial role in strengthening cyber resilience, protecting consumer data, and reinforcing trust in digital insurance platforms.
What IRDAI Expects from Regulated Entities
IRDAI has advised all regulated entities to observe October 2025 as Cyber Security Awareness Month and undertake a series of outreach and educational initiatives aimed at promoting cybersecurity awareness among employees, policyholders, and the wider public.
Some of the suggested activities include:
- Awareness campaigns via social media (reels, memes, infographics)
- SMS campaigns to educate policyholders about phishing and cyber frauds
- Broadcast messages on television and radio promoting safe digital practices
- Workshops and webinars on cyber hygiene for internal teams and agents
- Interactive quizzes or contests to engage customers and staff
These activities should be creative, wide-reaching, and tailored to the needs of different stakeholders within the ecosystem.
Submission Deadline: 5th November 2025
Entities are required to submit a summary report of the activities conducted during NCSAM 2025 to the Authority. The report should be sent via email to infosec@irdai.gov.in by 5th November 2025.
This reporting will not only help IRDAI assess the sector’s engagement but also identify best practices and innovative outreach strategies that can be replicated across the industry.
IRDAI’s Commitment to Cyber Resilience
As part of its broader mission aligned with Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, IRDAI continues to focus on modernizing the insurance sector while ensuring robust governance and risk management frameworks. Cybersecurity remains a cornerstone of this effort, particularly as the sector evolves to serve India’s digitally connected population.
In a time where cyber threats are as real as natural disasters, proactive awareness and collective action are key. Through NCSAM 2025, IRDAI aims to foster a digitally secure environment where innovation can thrive without compromising consumer trust or data privacy.
