Nationwide Strike Rescheduled By Central Trade Unions

In a significant development, the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Sectoral Federations/Associations has officially rescheduled the Nationwide General Strike from May 20 to July 9, 2025.

The decision comes in the wake of recent national developments, particularly the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, and the subsequent security response from the Indian Armed Forces.

A joint statement issued after the platform’s meeting on May 15, 2025, in New Delhi, underlined the sensitivity of the current environment and reaffirmed the platform’s commitment as a responsible, patriotic collective. The decision to defer the strike reflects a considered approach to national priorities, even as worker-related grievances remain pressing.

Key Highlights of the Statement:

New Strike Date:

9th July 2025 has been set as the new date for the Nationwide General Strike.

Reason for Postponement:

Ongoing national crisis and the need to avoid disruptions during a time of mourning and military response.

Protest Activities on May 20:

While the strike is deferred, massive demonstrations and mobilisations will proceed on May 20 at state capitals, district HQs, industry hubs, and workplaces to maintain momentum and visibility.

Core Demands:

  • Opposition to the implementation of Labour Codes perceived as anti-worker
  • Protection of minimum wages, social security, and employment rights
  • Reinstatement of retrenched workers, especially contract workers
  • Immediate consultation with trade unions through Indian Labour Conference and other forums

Condemnation of Employer Actions:

The joint platform expressed serious concern over what it calls an “onslaught by employers”, who, with government backing, are reportedly:

  • Increasing working hours unilaterally

  • Violating statutory minimum wage and social security norms

  • Retrenching workers—particularly contractual ones—without due process

These actions, according to the unions, are covert attempts to enforce the Labour Codes without proper legislative or consultative procedures.

Call for Dialogue:

The trade unions urged the Government of India to engage constructively, abandon unilateral decisions, and avoid further escalation or provocation. They emphasized that the union movement has always remained open to dialogue and democratic engagement.

The unions have called upon the working people and trade union bodies across the nation to intensify preparations for the rescheduled General Strike on 9th July 2025, ensuring it becomes a powerful statement of unity and worker resistance.
