The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a clarification regarding the promotion of faculty members in medical colleges and institutions who complete their Basic Course in Medical Education & Technology (BCMET) after their due date for promotion. This clarification comes in response to numerous representations received from faculty citing delays in obtaining BCMET slots and the lack of clear nomination norms in colleges. This notice was issued on April 12, 2025.
The NMC acknowledged the concerns raised by faculty members regarding the limited availability of BCMET course slots from designated institutions. Furthermore, representations highlighted the absence of transparent norms or seniority criteria followed by medical colleges when nominating faculty for these limited slots. This has resulted in promotion delays for many faculty members who were unable to complete the BCMET course by their expected promotion date.
In light of the BCMET course’s mandatory requirement for promotion, the NMC has clarified its policy. According to the new directive, if a faculty member completes the BCMET course after their due date for promotion and subsequently submits the completion certificate, they should be promoted with effect from their original due date of promotion.
This clarification provides significant relief to faculty members who have experienced promotion delays due to the aforementioned issues with BCMET course availability and nomination processes. By ensuring promotion from the original due date upon completion of the required course, the NMC aims to address the career progression concerns of its faculty.
The BCMET course is recognized as a crucial component of faculty development in medical education, equipping educators with essential skills and knowledge in teaching methodologies and educational technology. The NMC’s clarification underscores the importance of this training while acknowledging the challenges faced by faculty in accessing it in a timely manner.
While this clarification addresses the promotion aspect, it is expected that the NMC may further address the issues of BCMET slot availability and the need for transparent nomination processes in medical colleges to prevent future delays for faculty members seeking this essential training.
