NMC Integrates Char Dham Yatra Medical Duty into District Residency Program for PG Students

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced the inclusion of medical duty during the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand under the District Residency Program (DRP) for postgraduate (PG) medical students. This circular was issued on April 11, 2025.

This decision aims to provide PG students with unique learning opportunities while addressing the heightened healthcare needs during the pilgrimage.

The upcoming Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is expected to draw a significant influx of tourists and pilgrims, leading to increased demand for healthcare services in the region. The NMC recognizes that this event presents unique medical challenges, particularly due to the high-altitude environment, which can lead to various medical complications.

The NMC believes that this scenario offers an invaluable training opportunity for PG students, exposing them to medical conditions and challenges distinct from those encountered in typical clinical settings. The experience will enhance their ability to provide healthcare in resource-constrained environments.

The Government of Uttarakhand has appealed for additional healthcare support during the Char Dham Yatra. Furthermore, numerous PG doctors have volunteered to provide their services.

Recognizing the educational value and the need for healthcare support, the NMC has decided to subsume the posting of willing PG students under the District Residency Program. This will allow students to fulfill their DRP requirements while contributing to the healthcare needs of the Char Dham Yatra.

The NMC has directed the Nodal Officers of the respective states to facilitate the posting of volunteer PG students to support the health authorities in Uttarakhand. This collaborative effort will ensure that adequate healthcare resources are available during the pilgrimage.
