The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) is calling on all State Governments to standardize the qualifications and appointment process for Registrars of State Pharmacy Councils. This directive follows a decision made during the 119th Central Council meeting of the PCI held on February 28, 2025.
In a circular addressed to all State Governments, with intimation sent to the Health Ministry, the PCI has drawn attention to its earlier circular dated September 9, 1997, and Section 26 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948. These existing guidelines and legal provisions already touch upon the qualifications required for Registrars.
Furthermore, the Council has specifically suggested the inclusion of Pharm.D (Doctor of Pharmacy) as a recognized qualification for the post. The PCI has also recommended that State Governments frame Recruitment Rules for the appointments of Registrars in their respective State Pharmacy Councils.
The PCI aims to bring uniformity and enhance the quality of administration across all State Pharmacy Councils in the country. It seeks to ensure that individuals holding the crucial position of Registrar possess the necessary expertise and competence to effectively regulate the pharmacy profession within their states. The emphasis on framing specific Recruitment Rules is intended to bring more transparency and a structured approach to these appointments.
