In a move aimed at strengthening quality standards and consumer safety, the Ministry of Mines has issued the Tin Ingot (Quality Control) Order, 2025, under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This order mandates that all tin ingots manufactured or sold in India (except those meant for export) must conform to a specific Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The order will come into effect six months from the date of publication, which means manufacturers and traders must comply by October 17, 2025.
Key Provisions of the Order:
- Only tin ingots are covered under this regulation.
- All covered products must conform to IS 26:2024 – the Indian Standard for Tin Ingots.
- Manufacturers must obtain a license from BIS under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
- The BIS will serve as both the certifying and enforcement authority for this mandate.
📊 Table of Standards:
Goods or Articles | Indian Standard | Title of Indian Standard |
Tin Ingot | IS 26:2024 | Tin Ingot – Specification |
Note: The most recent version of the Indian Standard, as notified by BIS, will apply from the date of such notification.
This move aligns with the Indian government’s broader push towards enforcing uniform quality standards across industries and protecting end consumers from substandard materials.
