In a key legislative update, the Government of Tripura has officially enacted the Tripura Excise (Fifth Amendment) Act, 2025, marking a significant change in how consumption of intoxicants in chemist shops is regulated.
This amendment to the Tripura Excise Act, 1987, received the Governor’s assent on May 6, 2025, and was notified by the Law & Parliamentary Affairs Department on May 8, 2025.
🔑 Key Highlight:
Deletion of Section 55:
The amendment removes Section 55, which previously imposed penalties for allowing or consuming non-medicinal intoxicants on the premises of chemists, druggists, or dispensaries.
Previous Provisions (Now Deleted):
- Chemists allowing such consumption could face:
- Imprisonment up to 1 year, or
- Fine up to ₹3,000, or both.
- Individuals consuming such intoxicants could face:
- Imprisonment up to 3 months, or
- Fine up to ₹1,000, or both.
This legislative change signals a relaxation in regulatory enforcement regarding intoxicant usage in commercial medical establishments, possibly reflecting evolving legal or enforcement priorities.
