Tripura Regulates Night Shift Work for Women in Factories

In a move aimed at ensuring the safety and dignity of women workers, the Government of Tripura has issued a notification dated April 22, 2025, regulating the employment of women during night shifts in factories. The notification, issued by the Factories & Boilers Organisation under the Labour Department, invokes the proviso to clause (b) of sub-section (1) of Section 66 of the Factories Act, 1948.

Effective April 22nd 2025 , no woman shall be allowed to work in any factory in Tripura between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., except under specific conditions.

🔒 Key Conditions for Night Shift Work (Post 7 p.m.):

Consent Required:


Women cannot be compelled to work after 7 p.m.. Written consent must be obtained for any work beyond this time.

Factory Surveillance & Lighting:


Adequate CCTV coverage and lighting must be ensured both inside and outside the factory premises.

Transport Facility:


Safe transportation from the factory to the worker’s residence must be provided.

Safe Working Environment:


The employer must ensure healthy, hygienic, and non-hostile conditions for women at all times.

Rest Room Provisions:


Separate rest rooms should be provided for women to rest before or after shifts.

Workplace Rights Awareness:


Factories must display notices informing women about their rights as workers.

Sexual Harassment Compliance:


Mandatory compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 is required.

Grievance Redressal:


A Grievance Officer must be appointed, and a General Policy against harassment submitted to the authority.

Maternity Protections:


No employment shall violate the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, especially regarding working hours for pregnant and lactating women.

Time Restriction for Expecting Mothers:


Pregnant and lactating women are not permitted to work beyond 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
