In a move to further India’s digital payment ecosystem, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notification dated April 23, 2025, directing all Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to enable Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and UPI QR code payment options for transactions in both online and offline modes.
🧾 Why This Matters:
The decision aligns with the Government of India’s goal to build a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, where cashless and accessible transactions are the norm—even in the education sector.
💸 Key Highlights:
- UPI has emerged as a secure, convenient digital payment platform.
- It has made fee payments easier, especially for students in rural and remote areas.
- With the increasing shift to online education, UPI ensures easy payments for courses, certifications, and materials.
📈 New UPI Limit for Education:
- The UPI transaction limit for educational services has now been increased to ₹5 lakhs, reflecting the sector’s growing reliance on digital transactions.
🏛️ What HEIs Need to Do:
- Implement UPI and UPI QR-based payment systems across all payment touchpoints.
- Ensure integration with both online portals and physical campuses.
🛠️ For Technical Assistance:
HEIs may reach out to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI):
