In a major step towards streamlining tax return submissions and reducing paperwork, the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes and Profession Tax, Government of West Bengal, has issued a new directive to simplify the return filing process for registered employers under the West Bengal State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Rules, 1979.
As per Order No. I/637636/2025 dated May 7, 2025, return filers are no longer required to submit physical (hard) copies of Form III to the tax office. Instead, a revised online process has been implemented, aiming to alleviate the challenges taxpayers were facing due to dual submissions — both digital and physical.
Key Highlights of the New System
- Digital Submission Required: Employers must now download the return in Form III from the official Profession Tax website at https://professiontax.wb.gov.in, sign the printed copy manually, scan it, and then upload it.
- Upload Location: The signed return must be uploaded at the link provided next to the download link of Acknowledgement and Return on the website.
- Strict Instructions:
- Do not upload the acknowledgement or challans.
- No hard copy of the return will be accepted at the tax office under any circumstances.
- Effective Immediately: The order is now in force and applies to all return filings going forward.\
The order, issued by the Learned Commissioner of Commercial Taxes and Profession Tax, was released in response to several complaints from return filers about the difficulties involved in physically submitting paper returns after filing online.
“This change is aimed at reducing administrative burdens and improving taxpayer convenience while ensuring the authenticity of submissions,” said Nirmalya Bandyopadhyay, Joint Commissioner of Revenue (Profession Tax Headquarters) and Public Information Officer.
