FSSAI Extends Operationalization of Food Safety and Standards Nutraceuticals Regulations, 2022

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a direction re-operationalizing FSS (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, and Prebiotic and Probiotic Food) Regulations, 2022 (hereinafter called the FSS Nutraceuticals Regulations, 2022). This direction was issued on June 5, 2024.

It may be recalled that the FSSAI had operationalized the FSS Nutraceuticals Regulations, 2022 on March 29, 2023. On May 10, 2022, the FSSAI issued a direction permitting the use of certain additives and enzymes in health supplements.

Thereafter, FSSAI issued a direction dated October 18, 2022, extending the operationalization of both the abovementioned directions from October 1, 2022. Subsequently, the FSSAI issued further notifications dated April 11, 2023 and November 17, 2023, operationalizing this direction with effect from April 1, 2023 and October 1, 2023, respectively.

Now, by the present notification, FSSAI has decided to extend the operationalization of the direction dated November 17, 2023 with effect from January 1, 2024.

Additionally, FSSAI has decided to also permit the use of additives and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Table as per Codex in all categories and across all formats. This permission will continue till the final notification of these regulations.
