New Regulations for Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing Program Introduced

The Indian Nursing Council has unveiled the “Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing (NPMH) – Postgraduate Residency Program Regulations, 2023” in a bid to advance healthcare services in India. These regulations mark a significant milestone in reshaping the country’s health systems. They have come into force on March 6, 2024.

Acknowledging the importance of human resource development in healthcare, particularly in specialty and super-specialty services, the National Health Policy, 2017 emphasizes the need for advanced educational preparation and regulation. In line with this vision, the introduction of the Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing program aims to address the growing demand for specialized nursing care in tertiary care centers.

The program, which adopts a clinical residency approach, emphasizes rigorous educational preparation to enable mental health/psychiatric nurse practitioners to diagnose, treat, and provide preventive care for patients with mental illnesses. Based on competencies adapted from international standards, the curriculum comprises 20% theoretical instruction and 80% clinical experience, ensuring comprehensive training for aspiring nurse practitioners.

Designed for registered B.Sc. nurses, the NPMH program equips participants with advanced nursing skills to deliver specialized care to individuals with mental health issues. Upon completion, nurse practitioners will be able to assume various roles such as clinical experts, managers, educators, and consultants, contributing significantly to mental health care in community and clinical settings.

The program’s objectives include promoting mental health, providing competent care to individuals with mental illness, demonstrating clinical competence, applying evidence-based practices, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals across the continuum of care.

With the introduction of the Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing program, India takes a decisive step towards enhancing mental health care services and ensuring the well-being of individuals with mental illness. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering excellence in healthcare education and regulation, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare professionals alike.
