TRAI Cracks Down on Over 21 Lakh Fraudulent Mobile Numbers

In a major push to safeguard India’s telecom ecosystem, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced a massive crackdown on spam and fraudulent communication. As per Press Release No. 137/2025, issued on 24 November 2025, TRAI revealed that in the past year alone, more than 21 lakh mobile numbers and nearly one lakh entities involved in spam and telecom fraud have been disconnected or blacklisted. This unprecedented action underscores the power of user participation and the growing importance of proactive reporting.

Blocking Is Not Enough — Reporting Is What Stops Spam at the Source

TRAI’s latest advisory stresses a crucial point: Blocking numbers on personal devices does not prevent scammers from targeting others. At most, blocking hides the number on one user’s phone; it does not trigger investigations or corrective action by telecom authorities.

In contrast, when users report spam through the TRAI DND App, the system enables TRAI and telecom service providers to trace the origin, identify misuse patterns, and permanently disconnect offenders. This collaborative approach between citizens and regulators has already helped the country take sweeping action against telecom misuse at a national scale.

How 21 Lakh Fraudulent Numbers Were Traced and Disconnected

The crackdown was made possible primarily because lakhs of citizens actively reported spam calls and SMS using the TRAI DND App. Once a complaint is received, telecom service providers verify the nature of the communication, identify the sender, and take action ranging from warnings to outright disconnection and blacklisting.

With digital fraud on the rise—including OTP scams, phishing attempts, loan fraud, fake job offers, and impersonation calls—citizen reporting has emerged as India’s first line of defense.

TRAI’s Public Advisory: What Every Mobile User Should Do

To strengthen public safety, TRAI has issued a clear set of guidelines urging citizens to stay alert and take the following precautions:

  • Download the TRAI DND App from official app stores.
  • Report spam calls or SMS through the app, instead of only blocking them.
  • Never share personal, financial, or banking details on calls, messages, or social media.
  • Immediately disconnect if a call feels threatening, suspicious, or manipulative.
  • Report cyber fraud attempts to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or www.cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Report telecom misuse through Sanchar Saathi’s “Chakshu” feature, designed to catch fraudsters using telecom resources.

These measures are especially vital for vulnerable user groups such as senior citizens, women, and individuals who are digitally new or inexperienced.

A Safer Digital India Depends on Public Participation

TRAI has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and trustworthy telecom environment. While technology-driven monitoring and enforcement continue to evolve, the success of large-scale actions—such as the disconnection of 21 lakh fraudulent numbers—proves that citizen reporting is indispensable.

The message is clear: Every spam report counts. Every complaint helps protect someone else. By reporting suspicious communication promptly and encouraging others to do the same, citizens can play a crucial role in making India’s digital space safer and fraud-free.
