Kolkata, Mar 29 (UNI) The West Bengal Medical Council has cancelled the registration of two medics, attached to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals at EM Bypass, for alleged medical negligence led to death 30-year-old Sanjay Roy a year ago.
Sanjay Roy, a resident of Dankuni of Hooghly district, was critically injured in a motor bike accident on February 26, 2017, succumbed to his wounds at the super speciality private hospital. After death of the motor cyclist, two
days after the accident, the victim’s wife filed complain of medical negligence and inflated medial bills,
which created large scale resentment among the people of fraudulent medical practices across the state.
Chief minister Mamata Baenrjee had to intervened and the state health department had set up a inquiry committee to probe the disputes.
A published report of the day said that the West Bengal Medical Council, which was probing the death, announced cancellation of the registration number of two medics – Radiologist Usha Goenka for one year and surgeon Shyamal Sarkar for six months.
The inquiry committee in its report stated medical negligence, delay in release and tampering of documents as reasons for death of Sanjoy Roy at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.
The death had caused an outcry and eventually led to the setting up of a medical council by the state government to monitor functioning of private hospitals.
Talking to reporters at the state secretariat after submitting the findings of the probe committee and meeting the chief minister today, state Health Secretary Rajendra Shukla said the report indicated medical negligence, delay in Sanjay Roy’s release and tampering of documents related to his treatment.
