Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024

The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 have been introduced, bringing forth a structured framework for acquiring Indian citizenship through registration or naturalization. One of the key aspects introduced by these rules is the categorization of applications based on different eligibility criteria. Whether it’s individuals of Indian origin, spouses of Indian citizens, minor children of Indian citizens, or those who can establish a link with Independent India, each category is provided with specific forms and guidelines tailored to their circumstances.

For instance, Form IIA is designated for individuals of Indian origin seeking registration as Indian citizens, while Form VIIIA caters to those applying for naturalization. Such categorization simplifies the application process, ensuring clarity and efficiency.

Moreover, the rules emphasize the irrevocable renunciation of the applicant’s current citizenship upon approval of their Indian citizenship application. This underscores a commitment to the nation and ensures that individuals seeking Indian citizenship are fully cognizant of the implications of their decision.

The procedural aspects of the application process are meticulously detailed in the rules. Applications are to be submitted electronically to the Empowered Committee through designated District Level Committees. Upon submission, an acknowledgment is generated, marking the commencement of the verification process.

The verification process, overseen by the District Level Committee, entails scrutiny of submitted documents and administration of the oath of allegiance as prescribed by the Citizenship Act, 1955. The rules mandate personal appearance for oath-taking, underscoring the solemnity of the commitment being undertaken.

Following verification, the Empowered Committee conducts a thorough scrutiny of the application to ascertain compliance with the prescribed conditions. This includes inquiries deemed necessary to assess the applicant’s suitability for Indian citizenship. Upon satisfaction, the Empowered Committee may grant citizenship, signaling the culmination of the application process.

Once citizenship is granted, applicants are issued digital certificates, ensuring authenticity and ease of verification. Hard copies of certificates are also available upon request, catering to individual preferences.
