The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory confirming that the heavy metal limits applicable to Processed Eucheuma Seaweed (INS 407a) are the same as those for Carrageenan (INS 407).
Since INS 407a is essentially semi-refined carrageenan derived from red seaweeds, it must adhere to the limits specified for INS 407 under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulation, 2011.
Applicable Heavy Metal Limits
The horizontal heavy metal limits for both Carrageenan (INS 407) and Processed Eucheuma Seaweed (INS 407a) are as follows:
- Lead: 5 ppm (parts per million)
- Arsenic: 3 ppm
- Cadmium: 1.5 ppm
- Mercury: 1.0 ppm
This clarification ensures consistency in the quality control and safety standards applied to both the fully refined (INS 407) and semi-refined (INS 407a) forms of carrageenan food additives.
