The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India vide notification dated 13th August, 2019 has issued an order mandating food safety audit of food businesses holding central licence and falling under high-risk categories.
The FSSAI has listed six food businesses under high-risk categories:
- dairy products
- meat and meat products
- fish and fish products
- egg and egg products
- food for infant nutrition
- prepared food (catering).
To strengthen the food surveillance system, the FSSAI has introduced the concept of food safety audits through recognised private agencies. These food business operators are required to get safety audit done by a recognised audit agency at regular intervals specified by the authority.
