FSSAI Seeks Public Feedback on New Method for Testing Edible Oils and Fats

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is inviting public comments on a newly approved method for testing edible oils and fats. This method aims to detect harmful contaminants. This notice was issued on April 25, 2024.

The FSSAI’s Scientific Panel on Methods of Sampling & Analysis has approved a method for determining:

  • 2 and 3-MCPD fatty acid esters and
  • Glycidol fatty acid esters

These methods will be used for analysing these esters in edible oils and fats by acid transesterification.

These contaminants can form during high-heat processing of edible oils and fats. Consumption of these contaminants may pose potential health risks.

Public Input

  • Before finalizing the method, the FSSAI wants feedback from stakeholders, including industry experts, consumer groups, and scientists.
  • Comments and suggestions will help ensure the method is accurate, reliable, and efficient for detecting these contaminants in edible oils and fats.

How to Participate

  • Stakeholders can submit their comments by May 25, 2024
  • These comments shall be sent by email to sp-sampling@fssai.gov.in
  • Comments must be supported by scientific evidence for them to be considered.
