The Government of India is actively promoting the export of turmeric and other spices through a multi-pronged strategy, including the “SPICED” scheme and the newly established National Turmeric Board. This information was provided by the Minister of State for the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on August 12, 2025.

The Spices Board is implementing the Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development (SPICED) scheme to enhance the global reach of Indian spices. The scheme includes several programs aimed at quality improvement and market development, such as:
- Implementation of food safety and quality assurance mechanisms.
- Post-harvest quality upgrades and support for processing and value addition.
- Training programs for turmeric stakeholders to improve quality and entrepreneurship.
- Quality evaluation of export consignments to ensure compliance with the specifications of importing countries.
- Organization of domestic and international Buyer-Seller meets to establish direct market linkages.
To further harness the potential of turmeric, the National Turmeric Board was constituted on October 4, 2023, with a mandate to boost the entire turmeric ecosystem. Its key objectives include:
- Promoting new product development and value addition.
- Increasing international awareness and consumption of turmeric and its products.
- Facilitating market research and improving infrastructure and logistics for exports.
- Encouraging research, studies, and clinical trials on the medicinal properties of turmeric.
- Promoting capacity building and skill development for turmeric growers.
India continues to be a major player in the global turmeric market, consistently holding a significant share of world exports.
India’s share in world turmeric exports was 66% in 2024, an increase from 62% in 2023. The volume of turmeric exports from India was 176,325 metric tons (MT) in FY 2024-25. Maharashtra leads the states in revenue from turmeric exports, with a value of $155.35 million in FY 2024-25. The top five importers of Indian turmeric since 2020 are Bangladesh, the UAE, the USA, Malaysia, and Morocco.
