Government Pushes Nano DAP Adoption to Cut Import Dependency and Boost Fertilizer Efficiency

Key Initiatives and Regulatory Measures

A nationwide campaign for field demonstrations and awareness on Nano Urea Plus has also been launched across 100 districts. To facilitate application, initiatives such as the use of ‘Kisan Drones’ and the distribution of battery-operated sprayers are being undertaken.

The government has notified various Nano fertilizers under the Fertilizer Control Order, 1985. This includes Nano Urea Plus from IFFCO, notified on April 15, 2024; Nano DAP from IFFCO and CIL, notified on March 2, 2023; and Nano DAP from Zuari Farm Hub Ltd., notified on November 29, 2023, among others.

Nano fertilizers, including Nano Urea, are being made available at Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras (PMKSKs) and have been included in the monthly supply plan issued by the DoF.

While Phosphatic & Potassic (P&K) fertilizers, including DAP, are under an Open General License, the government has extended special provisions for the Kharif 2025 season to ensure a smooth and affordable supply. This includes ₹3,500 per MT to cover ‘Other Costs’ for both imported and domestic DAP, over and above the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS).

Import and Sale Trends

Despite the push for domestic innovation, DAP imports continue to play a significant role. The data provided on DAP sales and imports is as follows:

YearPoS sale of DAP (in LMT)Total Import (in LMT)
2023-24109.7256.71
2024-2596.2949.72

In October 2021, China amended its export catalogue, requiring additional inspection for fertilizer-related items, including DAP. India’s broader strategy aims to mitigate such external dependencies by promoting innovative, nutrient-efficient fertilizers
