The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) is encouraging the MedTech industry to actively leverage available government funds to boost domestic manufacturing and innovation. Speaking at the ‘India MedTech Expo 2025,’ Shri Ravindra Pratap Singh, Joint Secretary of the DoP, highlighted that despite the existence of various schemes, a significant portion of the allocated funds remains unutilized. He urged the industry to come forward with strong proposals when the next application round is announced.
Review of Medical Device Parks Scheme
Shri Singh addressed the session on ‘Strengthening India’s Medical Device Parks,’ confirming that the government is currently reviewing the scheme to explore additional support beyond just infrastructure. India currently has three such parks located in Gautambuddha Nagar (Uttar Pradesh), Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), and Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu). The goal of these parks is to mitigate the 15% cost disadvantage faced by domestic manufacturers by providing common infrastructure facilities. According to Shri Singh, all three parks are showing good progress, with civil infrastructure nearing completion and plots already being allotted to various units.
Dr. Jitendra Sharma, CEO of the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), cautioned against treating these parks as mere land banks and advocated for their development as a robust scientific ecosystem.
Focus on Digital Health and Global Standards
In a session on ‘SaMD, AI & Cyber Security,’ experts from academia and industry, led by Shri Jay Verdhan of MeitY, brainstormed on strategies to expand India’s MedTech market to $30 billion by 2030. The discussions emphasized the need for a robust regulatory framework and technology integration to scale Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) solutions and ensure global competitiveness in digital health innovation.
The expo also featured presentations from international regulators, including one from the UK, and from CDSCO’s Deputy Drug Controller, Mr. Aseem Sahu. Both expressed a mutual interest in collaborating to streamline regulatory approvals for the benefit of the medical devices industry.
The ‘India MedTech Expo 2025,’ organized by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, is a three-day event held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, and is set to conclude on September 6, 2025. It is being held in association with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices (EPCMD), and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
