FSSAI has allowed import of Food for Special Medical Purposes i.e. Food for 15 inborn errors of metabolism and 2 hypoallergenic conditions(as given in Annexure A of notification dated 1st November, 2018) for a further period of six months starting from 2nd November, 2018 or till the standards of such Specialty Food are notified, whichever earlier. However, the import is allowed only through Delhi and Mumbai ports.
Inborn Errors of Metabolism(IEM) and hypoallergenic conditions are special medical conditions which require Speciality Food. These foods are not readily available in the country. These are required by the hospitals for management of infants and children suffering from the error. FSSAI is yet to finalise the standards of these foods. The import was previously allowed for 2 years by the notification dated 2nd November, 2016.
