India and Brazil Bolster Agri-Innovation with Maitri 2.0 Cross-Incubation Programme

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has launched the second edition of the Brazil–India Cross-Incubation Programme in Agritech, known as Maitri 2.0, in New Delhi. The initiative aims to strengthen the agricultural partnership between the two nations, promoting a two-way learning platform for co-creation and innovation.

A Milestone for Agri-Collaboration

The launch event highlighted the deep-rooted partnership between India and Brazil, both of whom are key players in global forums like BRICS and G20. Dr. M.L. Jat, Director General of ICAR, emphasized that Maitri 2.0 seeks to leverage the complementary strengths of both countries to drive innovation-led growth in the agri-food sector.

The program aligns with the strategic vision of both nations for cooperation in agriculture, emerging technologies, and food security. The Brazilian Ambassador to India, H.E. Mr. Kenneth Nobrega, praised the initiative, calling it a strategic step towards creating synergies between the agritech ecosystems of India and Brazil.

Fostering a Stronger Agri-Food Ecosystem

Maitri 2.0 is designed to build resilient food systems and empower farmers by fostering collaboration between innovators, startups, and institutions from both countries. The program will focus on:

  • Strengthening Incubator Linkages: Facilitating connections between incubators in India and Brazil.
  • Exchanging Best Practices: Sharing knowledge and successful strategies in sustainable agriculture.
  • Promoting Co-incubation: Encouraging joint ventures and collaborative projects.
  • Exploring New Opportunities: Focusing on digital technologies and value-chain development.

Dr. Jat underscored ICAR’s impressive growth in innovation, with over 1,800 patents granted annually. He emphasized that the ultimate goal of commercialization is to deliver public-funded innovations to end-users, thereby addressing shared challenges like climate change and the need for sustainable intensification.
