With the upgrade of the Government Hospital at Manapparai to Tiruchi District Headquarters Hospital, there has been a sharp rise in the management of hospital waste, particularly the sewage water discharged from various wards and toilets of the hospital.

The hospital authorities have drafted various plans to beautify the hospital premises by setting up gardens on all the available space.

The taluk hospital at Manapparai was upgraded into the status of the Tiruchi District Headquarters Hospital and the new buildings built at an estimate of Rs. 2.55 crore were declared open in October 2009.

A separate hospital waste management unit functioning at an isolated and protected area of the hospital had been handling about 80,000 litres of wastewater daily – 52,000 litres in the morning and 30,000 in the afternoon. “With the increase in the number of patients being treated at the hospital, the quantity of sewage water being treated has been on the rise,” says the hospital source. According to the hospital sources, meticulous treatment process was being adopted.

It involved a series of process starting from collection of sewage water, filtration, and ultra-filtration before being let off into an isolated pond.

Expansion planned

Sources said that steps were taken to handle additional quantum of sewage water.

The handling would touch about 1.5 litres daily. Initially, the Public Works Department took up the work on treating the sewage water but at present, it is being managed by the hospital personnel.
