The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has identified an integrated strategy for the comprehensive growth of the agriculture sector, as stated by Minister of State in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. The strategy focuses on multiple key areas to support farmers and ensure a robust agricultural economy. This press release was issued on August 1, 2025.
The integrated strategy for the sector’s growth includes:
- Increasing crop production and productivity.
- Reducing the cost of production.
- Providing remunerative prices for farmers’ produce to enhance their incomes.
- Promoting agricultural diversification.
- Developing post-harvest value addition infrastructure.
- Facilitating adaptation to climate change for sustainable agriculture and mitigating crop losses.
According to a provisional estimate from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the Gross Value Added (GVA) agricultural growth rate in the Agriculture and allied sector for 2024-25 over 2023-24 is 4.6%.
The Minister highlighted that India is a diverse country with varying agro-climatic conditions and agricultural practices, and as such, agriculture is a state subject. He noted that various schemes of the Government of India are within the ambit of overarching national policies to support the states. The Minister also stated that the existing policy framework and schemes of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare are designed to address current challenges such as climate change, global price volatility, and agri-trade competitiveness, all while working to enhance farmers’ income. He concluded by emphasizing that self-sufficiency is not just an economic consideration but also has geopolitical implications.
