Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change issues draft rules for battery waste Management rules, 2020

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in its notification dated 20th February, 2020, has issued the Draft Battery Waste Management Rules, 2020, which proposes to supersede the Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001.

The Draft rules shall apply to every manufacturer, producer, re-conditioner, dealer, recycler, auctioneer, vehicle service centre, consumer and bulk consumer involved in manufacture, processing, sale, purchase, collection, storage, re-processing and use of batteries and all appliances into which a battery is or may be incorporated.

Whereas the following equipment are exempted from the application of these rules:

Equipment connected with the protection of the essential security interests such as arms, ammunition and war material, and intended specifically for military purposes, Emergency and alarm systems, Emergency lighting; and Medical Equipment.

The rules further deals with the responsibility of manufactures, dealers, bulk consumers etc and the procedure for registration/renewal of recycler’s The draft rules will be taken into consideration after the expiry of a period of 60 days from the date on which the copies of this Notification as published in the Gazette of India, are made available to the public.
