National Medical Devices Promotion Council to be set up under DIPP

Government has decided to set up of a National Medical Devices Promotion Council under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry for the growth of medical device sector. The Council will be headed by Secretary, DIPP.  There will be representatives from health care industry and quality control institutions along with Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone, Visakhapatnam, as a technical support.

The Council will have the following objectives and activities:

(i) Facilitation and promotion for the Indian MDI.

(ii) Organisation of periodic seminars, workshops and networking activities to garner views of the industry and understand best global practices.

(iii) Identification of redundant processes and rendering technical assistance to the agencies and departments concerned to simplify the approval processes for MDI.

(iv) Enabling entry of emerging interventions and support certifications for manufacturers for export of MDI.

(v) Facilitate domestic manufacturers to develop understanding of regulatory and non regulatory needs of the industry.

(vi)Driving a robust and dynamic Preferential Market Access (PMA) policy, by identifying the strengths of the Indian manufacturers and discouraging unfair trade practices in imports; and ensuring compliance with PMA.

(vii) Undertaking validation of Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) and other such entities within MDI sector, for new entrants.

(viii) Making recommendations to government based on industry feedback and global practices on policy and process interventions.
