Every year, 1st October is observed as National Voluntary Blood Donation Day (NVBDD) — a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of voluntary blood donors across the country. Spearheaded by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, this observance honors those who selflessly donate blood and serves as a call to action for more people to step forward.
This year’s campaign slogan, “Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives”, beautifully captures the essence of the day. Blood donation is not just a medical necessity — it’s a profound act of humanity and solidarity that saves lives, gives hope, and strengthens our healthcare system.
Why NVBDD Matters
In a country as vast and diverse as India, the demand for safe and timely blood transfusions is constant. Whether it’s during accidents, surgeries, childbirth complications, or for patients suffering from conditions like thalassemia or cancer, blood can be the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, a large portion of the population remains unaware of the importance of voluntary, unpaid blood donation.
NVBDD reminds us that we don’t need to wait for emergencies to act — we can be proactive. Voluntary donations ensure a stable and safe supply of blood, especially during critical times.
Activities on 1st October 2025
To mark this important day, the DGHS will launch a nationwide campaign promoting safe and voluntary blood donation. Key highlights include:
- Blood Donation Pledge: Available in English, Hindi, and regional languages, the pledge will be administered both physically and online to encourage mass participation.
- Blood Group Testing Camps: Organized across Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), hospitals, and blood banks, these camps will help citizens identify their blood type — crucial for both emergencies and future donations.
Mega Blood Donation Drive (17th Sept – 2nd Oct 2025)
Leading up to NVBDD, a Mega Voluntary Blood Donation Drive is being held across the country from 17th September to 2nd October 2025. This extensive effort is aimed at:
- Boosting donor registration
- Increasing blood unit collections
- Raising awareness, especially among the youth
All data from these donation drives must be uploaded to the e-Raktkosh portal, ensuring transparency, tracking, and efficient management of blood supplies.
Role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to play an active role in this national initiative. Students, especially those from NCC units and youth organizations, are being called upon to participate in awareness drives, pledges, and donation camps.
The involvement of voluntary organizations and NGOs such as the Indian Red Cross Society and Akhil Bhartiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad is also encouraged to widen the reach and impact of the campaign.
A Call to Action
Institutions are requested to coordinate locally and ensure wide-scale participation. A report of activities conducted must be shared with the Ministry of Education to document efforts nationwide.
💡 Final Thought
Your blood can save lives. Let’s come together as a nation on 1st October and beyond to donate blood, raise awareness, and spread hope. One unit of blood can save up to three lives — imagine the impact we can make together.
