The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an Advisory on the Implementation of the National Medical Register (NMR). This advisory was issued on 9th August, 2023.

It may be recalled that as the Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine Regulations, 2023 in its chapter III covers Transitory Provisions. These provisions state that:

All the existing medical practitioner enrolled in the Indian Medical Register or the State Medical Register, not having the registration number as per these Regulation shall update in the web portal of the Ethics & Medical Registration Board within a period of three months of publishing of these Regulation and obtain the Registration Number as a onetime measure and the licence so generated shall be valid for periodof five years from the date of issuance. For the purpose of updating of licence of such medical practitioner, no fee shall be charged by EMRB, NMC.

The NMC states that it is still in the process of launching an integrated web portal catering to all stakeholders. However, the launch is anticipated to take more time. Hence the NMC has clarified that the registration process for Registered Medical Practitioners (RMP) will begin once the portal gets activated and sufficient time will be allowed and extended if necessary, to permit the onboarding and operationalisation of the registration process.
