The National Medical Commission (NMC), through its Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), has released an updated seat matrix for the undergraduate medical course (MBBS) for the Academic Year 2025-26. These notices, dated October 10th and 13th, 2025, provide the seat count showing a notable increase in the national intake capacity.
The latest compilation continues the process of updating the seating arrangement following recent changes in the renewal of existing seats and the sanctioning of additional seats across the country.
Key Data on National Intake
The seat matrix reveals significant growth in the total number of medical seats available for the 2025-26 academic year:
- Total MBBS Seats (AY 2024-25): 117,750
- Total MBBS Seats (As of Oct 10, 2025): 126,600
- Net Increase in Seats: This latest update reflects a net increase of 8,850 seats compared to the previous academic year.
- Actual New Seats Granted (Excluding AIIMS & JIPMER): 9,075
- Seats Reduced During Renewal: 456
Noteworthy Changes Across States
The updated matrix includes sanctions for new medical colleges and expansions in various states:
1. New College Approvals
The list confirms new MBBS programs that have received approval for the 2025-26 academic year, including:
- Andhra Pradesh: Anna Gowri Medical College and Hospital (150 seats).
- Rajasthan: Arya Medical College & Hospital (50 seats), ESIC Medical College & Hospital, Jaipur (50 seats), and four other new private/government colleges.
- Uttar Pradesh: Autonomous State Medical College Amethi (100 seats) and ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Noida (50 seats).
- Maharashtra: Three new private/government medical colleges, including ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Andheri (50 seats).
- Kerala: Three new government/private medical colleges, including Government Medical College Kasaragod (50 seats).
- Odisha: PABITRA MOHAN PRADHAN MEDICAL COLLEGE, Talcher (100 seats) and Government Medical College Phulbani, Kandhamal (100 seats).
- West Bengal: Two new private colleges, RANIGANJ INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCE (100 seats) and PKG MEDICAL COLLEGE (50 seats).
2. Expansions in Existing Institutions
Several states saw major seat increases in existing private and government institutions:
- Karnataka: Many institutions saw capacity increases, including A J Institute of Medical Sciences (from 200 to 250), BGS Medical College and Hospital (from 150 to 250), and Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences (from 150 to 250).
- Maharashtra: Datta Meghe Medical College, Nagpur increased from 150 to 250 seats, and Mahatma Gandhi Missions Medical College, Aurangabad, increased from 200 to 250 seats.
- Kerala: Al-Azhar Medical College increased from 150 to 250 seats.
- Punjab: Guru Govind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, increased from 150 to 250 seats, and Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, increased from 100 to 150 seats.
- Tamil Nadu: Sri Venkateswaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Chennai increased from 150 to 250 seats.
