The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), an agency operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is scheduled to meet with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to address the significant shortage of comprehensive and affordable organ transplant insurance coverage in India. The initiative aims to improve access to life-saving surgeries as the demand for organ transplants continues to rise.
The discussions are expected to focus on closing a long-standing gap in India’s health insurance ecosystem: the limited or non-existent coverage for organ donors.
Addressing the Prohibitive Costs
The necessity for the meeting stems from the fact that while demand for transplants is increasing, the prohibitive cost of surgery remains a barrier. By meeting with the insurance regulator, NOTTO seeks to explore ways to make organ transplant insurance more affordable and comprehensive, ultimately improving the overall health infrastructure.
The meeting is anticipated to take place in the coming weeks.
