Steps Taken to Strengthen Food Safety Enforcement and Adulteration Control
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare provided a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, detailing the steps taken by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to strengthen food safety enforcement and control adulteration. FSSAI is responsible for laying down science-based standards for food articles and regulating their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure safe and wholesome food. While FSSAI is responsible for setting standards and overall coordination, State Food Safety Authorities are primarily responsible for enforcement at the field level.

FSSAI Clarification on Contaminant Limits for Processed Eucheuma Seaweed (INS 407a)
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory confirming that the heavy metal limits applicable to Processed Eucheuma Seaweed (INS 407a) are the same as those for Carrageenan (INS 407). Since INS 407a is essentially semi-refined carrageenan derived from red seaweeds, it must adhere to the limits specified for INS 407 under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulation, 2011.
