The Government of Punjab approves the maintenance of electronic registers under several labour laws

The Department of Labour of the Government of Punjab has issued a notification approving the maintenance of registers in electronic form. This notification applies to registers maintained under various labour laws and regulations. This notification is in line with a series of measures undertaken to improve the ‘Ease of Doing Business’.

Therefore, this notification was issued in consonance with the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Business Action Plan (BRAP) 2020 of the Department of Promotion of Industries and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

The notification aims at simplifying and rationalizing existing rules and introducing information technology to promote efficiency and effectiveness in governance.

For instance, this notification covers 25 labour laws including and not limited to the Employees Compensation Act, 1923; Payment of Wages Act, 1936; Minimum Wages Act, 1948; Factories Act, 1948, Industrial Disputes Act, 1947; Trade Unions Act, 1926; Maternity Benefit Act, 1961; Payment of Gratuity 1972; Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970, Punjab Shops and Establishments Act, 1958; Punjab Labour Welfare Fund Act, 1965 and Punjab Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays and Casual and Sick Leave) Act, 1965.
