The UGC has published a notice stating that the government of India has been committed to promote health and well-being for all and the Mental Health Policy 2014 and Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 fortify its efforts. The notice was issued on 6th January, 2023.
The notice acknowledges that suicide is a tragic loss of life that impacts those living with the loss and society as a whole. It goes on to state that with the right interventions suicide is preventable.
The notice highlights that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has formulated the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. The strategy uses the guidance of National and International documents for mental health and suicide prevention.
Hence UGC requests higher educational institutions to take action as listed in the strategy on a priority basis.
