The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) emphasized the critical need for regular sampling of commonly consumed food items and prompt disposal of related cases during a state review meeting held in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on Wednesday. The CEO specifically directed state food safety officials to collect samples of items like ghee, milk, paneer, and spices regularly, ensuring swift resolution of any detected adulteration cases. He also stressed the importance of expediting the establishment of a Food Safety Laboratory at Bikaner, assuring FSSAI’s full support for the initiative.
During the review, the CEO appreciated the proactive efforts of the Rajasthan government in promoting food safety and combating food adulteration. He instructed officials to maintain continuous monitoring to strengthen enforcement and highlighted the necessity of promptly disposing of pending food adulteration cases. The FSSAI CEO assessed efforts under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, focusing on preventing adulteration, reviewing legal cases, and evaluating manpower deployment.
The meeting also addressed the mandate of the FSS Act 2006, which requires the conclusion of adjudication within 90 days of the first hearing of a case. Additional District Magistrates from various districts, who serve as adjudication officers for food adulteration cases, attended this discussion.
The CEO also took stock of vacant Food Safety Officer (FSO) positions in the state and advised their earliest possible fulfillment.
The Food Safety Commissioner of Rajasthan, provided a detailed overview of current food safety operations and upcoming campaigns, particularly in anticipation of the festive season. The meeting was also addressed by the Executive Director of the Regulatory Compliance Division, and the Director, who shared strategic guidance for effective enforcement of the FSS Act 2006. Attendees included Chief Medical and Health Officers, Food Safety Officers (both online and offline), and other senior officials from various districts.
The meeting concluded with a shared resolve between central and state authorities to enhance collaboration, strengthen regulatory enforcement, and improve food safety compliance across Rajasthan.
