The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a new “Kind of Business” (KoB) category for ‘Ayurveda Aahara’ on its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal. This new provision, which came into effect on September 1, 2025, formalizes the licensing and registration process for manufacturers of these traditional food products.
The move follows the FSSAI’s notification of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022, and the subsequent publication of a list of specific Ayurveda Aahara products falling under Category A on July 25, 2025.
Key Specifications of the New Category
“Ayurveda Aahara” is defined as a food prepared in accordance with recipes, ingredients, and processes described in authoritative books of Ayurveda. The definition explicitly excludes Ayurvedic drugs, medicinal products, cosmetics, narcotics, and other substances regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Manufacturers of Ayurveda Aahara are required to obtain a Central License. The annual fee for this license is set at ₹7,500 + GST.
A new Food Category (FC) 102 has been created, with sub-categories for Ayurveda Aahara. The mandatory documents for these categories vary depending on the product type and any accompanying claims.
- For products listed under Category A, no additional documents are required if the product is on the standardized list.
- For products in other categories, an approval letter from FSSAI (Headquarters) is mandatory.
- For claims related to “Disease Risk Reduction,” an approval letter from FSSAI (Headquarters) is required.
The inspection checklist for Ayurveda Aahara will be the same as that for the ‘General manufacturer’ category. The licensing process requires 10 documents, similar to the general manufacturing category.
The new food category has also been made available for other business types, including Trade/Retail, Exporter-Manufacturer, and 100% Export-Oriented Units.
