The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a Corrigendum on 21 November 2025, amending the previous notification dated 11 November 2025. The amendments relate to the measurement of vehicle width and the mandatory fitting of advanced safety systems.
Amendment to Vehicle Width Measurement
The following items shall not be considered when measuring the overall width of a motor vehicle:
- A rear-view mirror or devices for indirect vision.
- A guard rail or a direction indicator.
- A rub-rail (rubber beading) having a maximum thickness of 20 millimeter on each side of the body.
- Sensors along with their casing used for advanced driver assistance systems such as Blind Spot Information System, Moving Off Information system, etc.
These excluded devices must still be within the prescribed dimension if specified in the respective standards.
Amendment to Mandatory Advanced Safety Systems
A new sub-rule (12) is inserted into Rule 96, mandating the fitting of two key safety systems for specific vehicle categories:

The rules specify that the fitment of AEBS shall be as per AIS-162 and the Vehicle Stability Function as per IS 11852:2019, until corresponding BIS specifications are notified.
Vehicle Categories:
- M2 & M3: Vehicles designed for carrying passengers (e.g., buses).
- N2 & N3: Vehicles designed for carrying goods (e.g., trucks and heavy commercial vehicles).
