BIS Certification for Pashmina’s Authenticity

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on August 2, 2019, decided to assign an Indian Standard for certifying the purity of Pashmina products. The step has been taken to scrap the mislabeled and adulterated Pashmina products in the market and to safeguard the interest of local artisans and nomads. This will curb malpractices and will ensure authentic supply of Pashmina in the market at better prices.

The Ministry of Textiles has also proposed a funding of Rs. 20 crore to set up an initiative project in Ladakh to boost supply in Pashmina products and to safeguard the interest of local community and encourage families to take up the occupation in Pashmina. Further, the certification will provide impetus towards value addition of Pashmina in Ladakh.
