The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in its notification dated 24th October, 2019 has banned the import of PET flakes made from used PET bottles.
Therefore, DGFT amends chapter 39 of Indian Trade Clarification (Harmonized System), 2017 Schedule-1 which deals with Import policy, in which condition No.2 has been amended.
“The import of PET bottle waste/ scrap/ PET flakes made from used PET bottles etc is “Prohibited” as per OM No. 23/66/2019-HSM dated October 03, 2019 of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change”.
PET flakes are generally produced by recycling PET bottles and are used as raw material for a range of products which would have otherwise used polyester.
